Balanitis
Balanitis is inflammation of the glans (head of the penis).
If both the head and foreskin are inflamed, it’s called balanoposthitis.
It’s more common in uncircumcised males but can happen to anyone.
🔥 What Causes It?
Most common causes:
-
🦠 Yeast infection (Candida)
-
🧼 Poor hygiene (buildup under foreskin)
-
🧴 Irritating soaps or chemicals
-
🦠 Bacterial infection
-
🍬 Diabetes (high sugar promotes yeast growth)
-
🧬 Sexually transmitted infections (sometimes)
⚠️ Common Symptoms
-
Redness and swelling of the head
-
Itching or burning
-
Pain when urinating
-
White discharge or thick buildup
-
Unpleasant odor
-
Tight foreskin (difficulty pulling it back)
Symptoms can range from mild irritation to significant discomfort.
🧠 Why It Happens More in Diabetes
High blood sugar allows yeast to grow more easily — especially in warm, moist areas.
Recurrent balanitis can sometimes be a sign of undiagnosed diabetes.
💊 Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause:
-
🧴 Antifungal cream (for yeast)
-
💊 Antibiotics (if bacterial)
-
🚫 Avoid irritants (harsh soaps, scented products)
-
🧼 Gentle daily cleaning and drying
-
📉 Blood sugar control (if diabetic)
Most cases improve within a few days to a week with proper treatment.
🚨 When To See A Doctor
-
Severe pain
-
Persistent symptoms after treatment
-
Repeated infections
-
Difficulty urinating
-
Foreskin stuck and cannot retract (paraphimosis — emergency)
